Fair Housing

The Fair Housing Act is a federal law that protects people from housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability, and familial status. Executive Order 13988 directed all federal agencies to extend protections under all existing civil rights statutes that prohibit sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity. On February 11, 2021, HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity stated that they would begin enforcing the Fair Housing Act to prohibit housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
